Ha’iku Water Quality

Many streams in the Haiku area (from Maliko Gulch to Ke’anae) are used recreationally as well as for domestic or agricultural purposes, but very little is known about the quality of the water in these streams. HCA, in partnership with Maui County, Surfrider, and the University of Hawai’i, Water Resources Research Center, has started to sample from four popular Haiku streams:

  • Na’ili’ilihaele stream. This flows through the bamboo forest area.
  • Honopou stream.
  • Kailua stream, at the “dog pond”.
  • Ho’olawa. This has two branches. Ho’olawali’ili’i and Ho’olawanui, that flow through Twin Falls.

Sampling sites are marked with a red star in the map, above. We are gathering samples once per week from each of these streams. The table, below, provides a quick overview of streams. In situ data are published here within a few days of taking the measurement. Inorganic nutrients take a few weeks to be tested by the lab and are thus older. Stream pics show the recent condition of each location, on the day in situ samples were taken.
